Programs Used
This page is about how I make my site, if you're interested.

First off, it is written in PHP. PHP is a programming language for the web that is pretty popular now. It can connect to databases and stuff, but I don't use that. I use it to read information and generate the HTML for pages automatically. For example, when you look at a daily picture, you'll see the date in the URL. There is only one 'DailyPic' page, but based on the date in the URL, it will display the specified picture as well as the caption and comments associated with it. So basically it's a way for me to easily upload pictures/journals without having to make a whole new HTML page every time, and it lets you submit comments.
Additionally, I use JavaScript and style sheets. Javascript is for...uh...I guess you could say things that happen after the page is loaded. Like the navigator buttons. JavaScript is what tells it to change images when you have your mouse over it, and change again when you click. Style sheets are used for all the fancy formatting of fonts, tables, layers, etc these days. Until I worked on this new design, I had no idea that CSS had advanced so far. You can really control every bit of formatting of every object. It's neat.

As for actual programs used, I type everything in Notepad. Yes, that's the default text editor that comes with every copy of windows and doesn't support fancy stuff like bold, italics, images, or any formatting. Just pure, beautiful text. I actually wouldn't know how to use any of those programs like DreamWeaver or FrontPage that design the site for you.

For all image-related stuff I use Adobe Photoshop. (version CS2 at the time of writing this.) I just know enough to get by. At least I understand the pen tool a bit now.

For tracking all my site statistics, like visits and page views, I use Site Meter. It's free and let's you see things like graphs of page views over time, the details of people who visit (browser, IP, etc), and most importantly the referral pages. Meaning which page linked to your website. This is how I know what crazy things people type into search engines and get to my site through. I've had this almost since I made my site and they've kept track of everything for years.
